Research Scholarships

Swinburne University offers a variety of scholarships to students undertaking a PhD or a Professional Doctorate. Scholarships are awarded to students of exceptional research potential in two competitive rounds per year.

Main Round 2014 - closing date 31 October 2014.

Mid-Year Round 2015 - closing date TBA.

All documentation for the current scholarship round will be updated here at least one month prior to the closing of the round.

Please be advised that an earlier scholarship application closing date applies to applicants from the following countries: Côte d'Ivoire, Democratic Republic of Congo, Democratic People's Republic of Korea (North Korea), Eritrea, Guinea-Bissau, Iran, Iraq, Lebanon, Liberia, Libya, Russia, Ukraine, Somalia, Sudan, Burma, Fiji, Former Federal Republic of Yugoslavia, Syria and Zimbabwe.

Chancellor's Research Scholarship (CRS)

Chancellor's Research Scholarship (CRS)

The Swinburne University Chancellor's Research Scholarship (CRS ) is the University's premier research award. They are awarded to students of exceptional research potential to undertake a higher degree by research (HDR). The successful applicants will become members of a research team working under the direction of senior researchers.

The awards provide an annual stipend of $30,000, an Establishment Grant of up to $3,000 and up to $5000 for a 6 month overseas placement in a collaborating laboratory or organisation nominated by Swinburne. This overseas placement is a condition of the award. The scholarship also covers tuition fees.

Chancellors Research Scholarships are open to all research doctorate applicants - international and Australian and New Zealand citizens.

Vice-Chancellor's International Scholarship (VCIS)

Vice-Chancellor's International Scholarship (VCIS)

The Swinburne University Vice-Chancellor’s International Scholarship (VCIS) is a new scholarship available only in the Mid-Year Scholarship Round. The VCIS are awarded to students of exceptional research potential to undertake a higher degree by research (HDR). Awards are available in all discipline areas but are only available to International applicants.

The awards provide an annual stipend of $25,392 and cover the cost of Overseas Health Cover (OSHC). The award also covers to cost of tuition.

Australian Postgraduate Award (APA)

Australian Postgraduate Award (APA)

Australian Postgraduate Awards are available to domestic students with a First Class Honours result or equivalent, to support their study towards a Higher Degree by Research. Awards are available in all Discipline areas.

Australian Postgraduate Awards offer a non-taxable indexed stipend of around $25,392 p.a. in 2014 and a tuition fee scholarship for up to three years for doctoral studies. Relocation assistance and thesis preparation assistance are provided. These scholarships are open to Australian citizens, New Zealand citizens and Australian permanent residents. International Postgraduate Research Scholarship (IPRS)

International Postgraduate Research Scholarships (IPRS)

International Postgraduate Research Scholarships are open to international applicants only. These scholarships cover annual tuition fees for four years for a Doctoral research degree. The scholarships will also cover the costs of health care cover.

The International Postgraduate Research Scholarship (IPRS) scheme is funded by the Commonwealth Government through the Department of Industry, Innovation, Climate Change, Science, Research and Tertiary Education (DIICCSRTE). Its purpose is to attract high quality overseas postgraduate students to areas of research strength in higher education institutions to support Australia's research effort. These scholarships may be available for international students from any country undertaking postgraduate research in areas of University research strengths. Special Purpose Assistance Scholarship

Special Purpose Assistance Scholarship

The Special Purpose Assistance (SPA) Scholarship has been established to assist higher degree by research students who encounter financial hardship due to an unforseen change in their personal circumstances, such as an accident, medical condition, family disruption or disaster (fire, flood etc.).  Open to both local and international students undertaking doctoral and Masters by Research programs. Tuition Fee Scholarship (TFS)

Tuition Fee Scholarship

The Tuition Fee Scholarship offers a tuition fee exemption for up to four years for doctoral studies and two years for Masters by research. This scholarship is open to international students. Students are automatically considered for this scholarship as part of the application for candidature process.

Research Training Scheme (RTS)

Research Training Scheme

All commencing higher degree by research places for Australian residents are funded by the Australian Government under the Research Training Scheme (RTS). Successful domestic candidates will hold the allocated RTS place for the period of the candidature: up to a maximum of four years of full-time equivalent funding for doctoral students, and two years for research masters. In order to be eligible for an RTS place, students must be an Australian citizen, Australian permanent resident, or a New Zealand citizen and enrolled in a research higher degree course on a full- or part-time basis.

In most cases, to apply for these scholarships one must already have received an offer of candidature from Swinburne. Australia Awards

Endeavour

The Endeavour Awards is the Australian Government’s internationally competitive, merit-based scholarship program providing opportunities for citizens of the Asia Pacific, the Middle East, Europe and the Americas to undertake study, research and professional development in Australia. Awards are also available for Australians to undertake study, research and professional development abroad.

If you wish to undertake your postgraduate studies at Swinburne and you wish to apply for an Endeavour Award, you will require an offer of candidature from Swinburne before you can finalise your Endeavour application. Visit the application page for information on applying for candidature. Please ensure that your candidature application reaches Swinburne University on or before 30 May 2014 (this is Swinburne’s internal Endeavour closing date and the closing date for the Swinburne Research 2014 Mid-Year Scholarship Round). Please ensure that you include in your application an indication that you wish to apply for an Endeavour Award. The Endeavour Award applications will be reviewed during the mid-year scholarship ranking process. Those Endeavour applicants who are successful in being offered candidature will then be provided assistance from Swinburne Research, in conjunction with Swinburne International, to finalise their Endeavour applications.

NICTA/Swinburne PhD Scholarship - Swinburne Software Innovation Lab

The newly formed Software Innovation Laboratory (SSIL) is offering at least eight PhD scholarships to suitable candidates. SSIL is a laboratory established jointly by Swinburne University of Technology and National ICT Australia (NICTA). Our goals are to carry out innovation R&D in the areas of information technology, software engineering and computer science. SSIL is based in Melbourne, Australia.

We seek suitable PhD candidates who have attained first-class at honours or master level in computer science, software engineering or related disciplines. The candidates must have some research exposures during their studies. Research projects will be in the fields related to data analytics, software algorithms, cloud computing, optimisation, data visualisation, human-computer interface, agent-oriented computing and software architecture. Project details will be communicated to candidates as they become available. Selection of candidates will depend on skills and the requirements of each project.

The PhD candidature is 3.5 years. We offer an annual stipend of around A$25,000 per annum (tax free). The candidate will work with Swinburne supervisors and an industrial partner on a specific research topic. The PhD research and training is aimed to prepare a PhD student to become either an academic researcher or to work in the industry. Australian and international candidates are welcome to apply. Victoria India Doctoral Scholarships Program (VIDS)

The Victoria India Doctoral Scholarships Program is an initiative of the Victorian Government which aims to attract the best and brightest young Indian scholars to Victoria who will contribute to global knowledge and the thriving Indian and Victorian economies and societies and enhance the relationship between India and Australia. The program is managed by the Australia India Institute, working in partnership with the Victorian Government and institutions including Swinburne University of Technology. These scholarships valued at $90,000 each, give Indian doctoral students the opportunity to work with top Victorian researchers and supervisors, use cutting edge research infrastructure and facilities, and enjoy a welcoming lifestyle in a cosmopolitan community. Victorian International Research Scholarships (VIRS)

The Victorian International Research Scholarship Program supports high performing international scholars undertaking PhD studies in Victoria.

The scholarships aim to attract the brightest international students to Victoria's world class universities, rewarding them with sponsored access to quality research infrastructure and expertise. Five 3-year scholarships, each worth $30,000 per annum, are awarded each year.

If you wish to undertake your postgraduate studies at Swinburne and you wish to apply for a Victoria International Research Scholarship, you must be put forward by Swinburne University for this award. Victorian Scholarship Package

Swinburne University of Technology is contributing 8 scholarships to the Victorian Scholarship Package, that was announced during the Super Trade Mission to China.

Details of the scholarships:

  • The scholarships are valued at $ 24,653 per annum (the 2013 Australian Postgraduate Award rate) and will be indexed as per the Australian Postgraduate Awards.
  • Scholarships are only available for PhD programs.
  • Scholarships will be available to Chinese students seeking to undertake research in areas aligned to Swinburne’s expertise:
    • Engineering
    • Physical and Chemical Sciences
    • Information and Communication Technologies
    • Social Sciences
    • Life and Health Sciences
    • Business and Enterprise
    • Design
    • Maths
  • The award of scholarships is dependent on the availability of supervision and alignment of the research proposal to Swinburne’s areas of expertise.
  • All students must meet the entry requirements as detailed in the University’s Higher Degrees by Research Policy, and apply as per the University’s approved processes.
  • Scholarship applications will be considered twice annually – in May and October.
  • Scholarships will be awarded on a competitive basis.
  • The type of scholarship that will be awarded will be a Swinburne University Postgraduate Research Award (SUPRA).

Research Scholarships for International Students-Chile, UK, Europe, Vietnam, Iraq & Spain

Students from Chile

Students from Chile are eligible to apply for a scholarship under the Chilean Bicentennial Fund to undertake postgraduate degrees in Australia.

Upon completion of the program, students must return to Chile within 24 months, and reside in Chile for the same duration as the scholarship. If they return to Chile and live outside of Santiago, this period is reduced to half of the scholarship period. If this condition is not met, they will be required to repay the scholarship.

The stipend is US$1556 per month. Students are allowed to take family - an additional 10 percent is paid for a spouse, 5 percent for each child. They are also awarded $500 for settling in, and again for returning home and an additional $300 for books and materials.

Students from the United Kingdom

The Northcote Graduate Scholarship is administered by the Menzies Centre for Australian Studies at Kings College in London. Scholarships are awarded to enable students who are normally resident in the United Kingdom to undertake a higher degree at an Australian university for a period of up to three years.

Applicants must ascertain their eligibility for an Australian graduate programme. There are no limitations as to the field of study. The scholarship provides economy class return air fares to Australia, payment of compulsory fees and charges at an Australian university and an annual allowance.

Students from Europe

The Endeavour Europe Awards are designed to provide financial assistance to students from certain European countries to undertake a masters or PhD degree in Australia. There are no restrictions on the field of study. Funding is only available for 12 months and students must ensure that they have adequate funding to cover the remainder of their stay in Australia. The award includes a travel allowance, establishment allowance and monthly stipend. The award does not cover the tuition fees. Applicants from EU member states, Norway, Switzerland and Croatia are eligible to apply.

Students from Vietnam

Swinburne has entered into a Joint Scholarship Agreement with the Ministry of Education and Training – Vietnam International Education Department (MOET-VIED). Under the agreement, Swinburne has agreed to provide tuition fee waivers to successful MOET-VIED scholarship recipients.


Students from Iraq

The Government of Iraq’s scholarship program, administered by the Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research (MoHESR) will cover the cost of tuition, health insurance and living expenses for scholarship holders whilst they are enrolled at Swinburne. Up to 80 PhD and Masters by Research students will be offered candidature at Swinburne each year under this scheme.

Students from Andalusia, Spain

The TALENTIA Fellowship Program is an initiative by the Ministry for Innovation, Science and Enterprise (at present the Ministry of Economy, Innovation and Science) in Andalusia, Spain, that provides postgraduate scholarships to students from Andalusia allowing them to study abroad in selected institutions. Applicants must be connected to Andalusia by birth, residence, work, university or blood and must adhere to a four year work commitment in or for Andalusia upon completion of the postgraduate degree. Hence it is important to note that not all Spanish students are eligible to apply for this fellowship. While Swinburne is not currently on the list of approved institutions, the list  is used as a guide for the evaluation process. The Evaluation and Selection Committee allows applicants to select educational centres that are not included on the list. In those cases the applicant is requested to submit additional information that proves that the chosen program and university suits their career path and return plan and can be measured with the universities and programs on the list of prestige universities and areas of recommendation.

Joint Research Engagement- Engineering Cadetship

The Joint Research Engagement- Engineering Cadetship Component is available to Higher Education Providers that have enrolled, domestic students in Higher Degree by Research studies and those students participate in a Cadetship with a business that requires the student to be involved in research and development activities that are eligible for support under the Research & Development Tax Incentive Scheme.

The Engineering Cadetship Component will:

  • Open and highlight a pathway for research students to gain experience in industry specific research and development in the private sector;
  • Increase collaboration between Swinburne and industry to strengthen research and development outcomes; and
  • Add value to the student’s HDR experience and enhance the student’s career prospects.

Swinburne currently has up to four awards available to eligible students.
