The SCAR Fellowship Programme is designed to encourage the active involvement of young scientists and engineers in Antarctic scientific research, and to strengthen international capacity and cooperation in Antarctic research. The fellowships are intended to allow researchers from one SCAR member country to undertake short term visits to major international laboratories, field facilities, or home institutions in or operated by other SCAR member countries, in order to become acquainted with recent advances in research or to develop long-term scientific links and partnerships. The work must be carried out in a research group of a SCAR nation different from that of the applicant's origin.

Topics for support should make a contribution to the objectives of one or more of the five Scientific Research Programmes endorsed by SCAR:

  • Antarctic Climate Evolution (ACE)
  • Subglacial Antarctic Lake Environments (SALE)

National Alliance for Research on Schizophrenia and Depression (NARSAD) - Distinguished Investigator Award website - Closing Date: 8 May 2008

The NARSAD Distinguished Investigator Award program supports basic and/or clinical investigators. Research must be relevant to schizophrenia, major affective disorders or other serious mental illnesses including research with bipolar disorders, borderline disorders with depression and suicide, and research with children. A small number of letters of intent will be selected for further review with additional information requested. The second tier of applications will also be brief, but will provide the investigator an opportunity to provide more detail on methods, potential significance, feasibility, and institutional support.

The total request should not exceed $US100,000. Funding of institutional overheads at 8% (excluding equipment) is allowed and the overhead must be included within the total budget request.

Applicants must be a full professor (or equivalent), and maintain peer reviewed competitively funded scientific programs. Scientists that have previously received a NARSAD Distinguished (Established) Investigator Award may not receive the award for a second time until five years has elapsed since the beginning date of the prior award. Since applicants are already funded, it is essential that the letter of intent state how the proposed work is not feasible without new funds—NARSAD does not seek to extend current work of established investigators, but rather to stimulate new approaches and projects from senior investigators.

The Australian Association for Research in Education makes an annual award known as the AARE Doctoral Thesis Award. The award comprises a citation from the Association together with a return airfare to fly the awardee to the upcoming AARE Conference. The first award was made in 1989.

This award is intended as a recognition of excellence in educational research by doctoral students. While only one award will be made each year, It is seen by the Association as a way of recognising the high quality contribution made to educational knowledge by graduate students, and at the same time promoting dissemination and furthering of research. The award comprises a citation from the association together with a return airfare to fly the awardee to the AARE conference.

The main criteria for assessment of excellence in doctoral research will be the contribution made to theoretical, empirical, and/or methodological knowledge in education. In particular, preference will be given to studies which make a conceptual advance in educational theory, policy and practice, which point to the methods of improving educational practice or pioneer innovation, which contribute through disciplined research to knowledge on which new educational practices may be based, or which contribute to advances in methodology of educational research, evaluation and dissemination.
