Media Training for Researchers

Free media training is available to all staff and research higher degrees students interested in developing their media interviewing skills. The session is 3 hours long and specifically tailored for Swinburne staff with the aim of making participants feel comfortable about dealing with journalists. The training relies on participants reading a 20 page handout, prior to the session, about working with the media and Swinburne's Media and Communications Unit, and coming prepared with a topic and three or four key messages.

The session is run by former ABC radio and The Australian reporter, Jim Buckell. The training begins by detailing a few of the key points researchers need to know when working with the media. The remainder of the session is devoted to conducting mock media interviews. The interviews are then played back and the researchers receive feedback on their performance.

Training sessions are scheduled according to demand, with a maximum of three participants. If you would like to know more or want to book into a session please contact Heather Crosling (Media Relations Manager) on ext 5968 or email hcrosling@swin.edu.au.
