Applying for funding
Swinburne Research administers all applications for funding that involve research, including those to government and private agencies, and charitable foundations. All research applications must be submitted through Swinburne Research and must be accompanied by the internal cover sheet. Incomplete applications, such as those without an internal cover sheet or without the appropriate signed funding body forms cannot be accepted for submission.
Step-by-step process for applicants:
- Applicants send an informal email to arawlings@swin.edu.au notifying Swinburne Research of their intent to apply for a specific grant.
- Applicants submit their draft application to Swinburne Research by the internal deadline as advertised in the Research Bulletin. For schemes not advertised, applications should be received by Swinburne Research one week before the funding body closing date.
- Swinburne Research undertakes the internal review process of applications and provides feedback to the applicant.
- The final version of the application and a completed internal cover sheet is submitted to Swinburne Research, which attaches a letter of endorsement and organises submission to the granting body. The letter of endorsement which also names Swinburne Research as the administrative contact, ensures that Swinburne Research will be informed of the funding outcome, enabling it to maintain up-to-date records and produce accurate financial reports.
Explanation of the internal process:
The internal submission and review process for funding proposals seeks to ensure that applications:
- are well-matched to the goals and purposes of the funding agency
- comply with institutional and funding agency requirements
- are accurate in their provision of budgetary and institutional information
- are written and presented clearly and concisely
Signatories to grant applications will look at questions such as:
- Are there sufficient facilities and equipment available to support the proposed research?
- Does the project fit within the overall objectives of the Faculty?
- Are human or animal subjects to be involved in the proposed research?
- Have biohazards been identified?
- Are full and appropriately documented costs included in the budget?
- Is institutional information accurate?
Research Infrastructure Levy
Generally, research income other than income awarded from nationally competitive grants, will incur a 15% levy. Please view the 'Administration of Infrastructure Contribution on Research - Related Income' policy for more information on this levy.
